BREAST HEALTH

Most women would not argue that the threat of breast cancer is ever present in the back of our minds. Statistics continue to soar and in 2006, over 141,000 women were newly diagnosed, with over 40,000 women dying of it. At this point in time, the best we think we can do is closely monitor our breasts for changes through self breast examination and arrange for regularly scheduled mammograms.

Is there anything else available? YES.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could take a more proactive approach to our breast health? To find a way to monitor early changes that might be an early indication of a developing cancer? Well, there is and it’s called breast thermography. Thermography uses a highly accurate infrared camera to measure heat radiating from our breasts, looking for areas that emit more heat than others. Elevated heat is an early sign that breast tissue has a higher metabolic rate and more blood flow to that area, two signs of abnormal breast metabolism---two signs of a possible developing cancer that might not yet show up on mammogram. Studies have followed these abnormal heat signatures and found that over time these abnormal hot areas often develop a cancer, sometimes 8-10 years after the first abnormal thermogram identifies it.

Breast thermography has been a developing science since the late 1950’s and has over 800 peer reviewed studies documenting it as a valuable addition to mammogram in evaluating breast health. You may not have heard much about it in the past as the Sacramento area has not had the availability of breast thermography until now.
